A mum has shared her unique labour journey after giving birth to twins – three months early and nine days apart. Jo-Marie Senekal, 31, and her husband Hermanus, 35, were anticipating the arrival of twins – one girl and one boy. They had prepared their nursery well in advance, but the twins surprised them by arriving much earlier than expected and with a nine-day gap between their births.
Jo-Marie recounted the unexpected turn of events when she went into labour at just 28 weeks pregnant. Initially dismissing it as false labour pains, she eventually sought help and was rushed to the hospital. Hermanus, who was on a hunting trip at the time, received the news of the sudden labour and hurried back home, anxious about what news awaited him.
The twins, Michelle and Hermanus Jr, were born prematurely, with Michelle weighing only 940g and Hermanus Jr even smaller. Doctors administered medication to delay the labour and aid in the babies’ development. Hermanus arrived in time to meet his daughter, who was tiny, before she was taken to the incubator. Nine days later, little Hermanus Jr made his entrance into the world, completing the family of four.
The family now spends their days at the hospital, where the twins continue to grow stronger. While it may be a few more months before they can bring the babies home, Jo-Marie expressed gratitude for her “medical miracles.” She marvels at the unusual circumstances of their births and looks forward to celebrating their birthdays, which will fall somewhere between the nine-day gap.
Despite the unexpected challenges, Jo-Marie and Hermanus are prepared and eager to welcome their twins home when the time comes. Their focus remains on the health and well-being of their precious babies, rejoicing in their progress and looking forward to creating new memories as a family.
