Two children tragically lost their lives in an M4 crash caused by a drink driver, with their mother seriously injured in the incident. Gracie-Ann and Jayden Lucas were travelling with their mother, Rhiannon Lucas, and a friend when their stationary vehicle was struck by a drunk and drugged driver, Martin Newman, on February 5, 2022. The collision resulted in the deaths of four-year-old Gracie-Ann and three-year-old Jayden within days of each other at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Newman, who was found to be driving well over the legal alcohol limit and had consumed both alcohol and cocaine, was later sentenced to nine years and four months in prison.
Two and a half years after the devastating crash, Rhiannon has shared the lasting impact it has had on her life, including memory and mental health struggles. She recounted not being able to recall much of the crash or its aftermath due to pain medication, highlighting the challenges she faced. Despite her injuries, hospital staff ensured that Gracie-Ann and Rhiannon could be together during their time in hospital. Rhiannon spoke of the siblings’ close bond and the heartbreaking loss they endured.
Following the accident, Rhiannon faced emotional turmoil and mental health difficulties, seeking professional help to cope with the trauma. She later welcomed a new daughter, Summer, finding solace in celebrating the lives of Gracie-Ann and Jayden. The family continues to honour the siblings on special occasions, remembering them fondly. However, they have expressed disappointment in Newman’s sentence length and believe such offenders should face harsher penalties to deter drink and drug driving.
