Private Eye editor, Ian Hislop, has been involved in an incident where the rear window of a taxi he was traveling in was smashed. Initially thought to have been hit by a bullet, the Metropolitan Police have stated that there is currently “no evidence of a firearms discharge”. The incident occurred in Soho on Tuesday morning, prompting an investigation by the authorities.
Hislop expressed his gratitude for the concern shown towards him and clarified the situation, stating that while the rear window of the taxi shattered, the police are investigating other possible explanations. The Metropolitan Police shared that they have conducted urgent CCTV and forensic examinations, finding no evidence of firearm discharge so far. They are considering a mechanical fault as a potential cause and continue their inquiries.
The incident was reported after the taxi driver stated that a shot was fired towards his vehicle in Dean Street, damaging the window. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in the incident. Hislop, known for his role as a team captain on the BBC comedy quiz show “Have I Got News For You” and as the editor of Private Eye magazine, thanked the police and everyone who contacted him following the incident.
The investigation caused a brief disruption as the police seized the vehicle and conducted examinations. More tests are awaited to determine the exact cause of the shattered window. Hislop, aged 64, is a prominent figure in the media industry, having been part of the comedy show since its inception in 1990 and serving as the editor of Private Eye since 1986.
