A young mother had to undergo an arm amputation after breaking it while trying to fit a car seat, only weeks after giving birth, Wales Online reported. Jessica Lane, 31, from Berkshire, discovered she had been living with bone cancer after experiencing pain in her left arm and shoulder during her pregnancy in March 2022. Despite raising concerns with her doctor and midwife, she was initially told it was related to pregnancy and referred for physiotherapy.
Following the birth of her son Theo in July 2022, Jessica’s pain persisted. Attempting to fit a car seat in August 2022, her arm broke under pressure from a 13cm tumour. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma, she underwent surgery to remove the tumour but faced more setbacks, including further tumours and intensive chemotherapy.
In a bid to raise awareness about bone cancer, Jessica had her arm amputated in May 2023. Despite challenges in her recovery, she remains hopeful and resilient. Going through multiple surgeries and treatments, including battling neutropenic sepsis, Jessica’s journey has been tough. However, she is determined to spread hope and encourage others facing similar challenges.
Now campaigning for greater awareness of primary bone cancer, Jessica has become the face of this year’s Bone Cancer Awareness Week. Through her experience, she aims to inspire others facing similar battles to seek help early and understand they are not alone. The Bone Cancer Research Trust is working to help healthcare professionals detect red-flag symptoms promptly for timely treatment.
