A new store is set to inject new life into the St Elli Shopping Centre in Llanelli, Wales. The shopping centre has faced challenges in recent years with several shops closing down, especially in the aftermath of the Covid-19 lockdowns. Major retailers like Argos, Sports Direct, and Wilko have ceased operations in the centre, struggling to attract shoppers amidst competition from out-of-town shopping options like Parc Trostre.
Last year, plans were announced to convert part of St Elli into a late-night food court. Now, it has been revealed that a new discount shop, Boyes, will open in the former Wilko unit, marking its first venture into Wales with over 70 stores in England offering various products including fashion, footwear, and household items. Additionally, eight new retail units will be developed upstairs, along with the reopening of access to the shopping centre from the multi-storey car park, owned by CK.
The shopping centre’s spokesperson outlined further developments, with work on the food court accelerating next month and an upcoming HSBC branch within the premises. Local politicians in Llanelli have welcomed these changes, expressing optimism about the rejuvenation of the town. Deputy leader of Llanelli Town Council, councillor Andre McPherson, believes the new store and upcoming food court will attract more visitors and create a vibrant atmosphere in Llanelli. County councillor Suzy Curry added that these developments signal a positive upturn for the town centre, prompting hopes for further growth and investment from other businesses.
