New study backs ‘ultimate superfood’ which can help stop dementia and reduce blood pressure

A recent study has revealed amazing health benefits associated with what is being hailed as the ‘ultimate superfood’. The study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, found that blueberries can enhance blood pressure, endothelial function, and arterial stiffness. Blueberries have become a sought-after commodity due to their rich content of polyphenols, such as anthocyanins and resveratrol, known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Further research published in Nutrients and Antioxidants has shown that blueberries can improve glucose management, insulin levels, skin elasticity, and skin roughness. These findings underscore the numerous health benefits of blueberries, which are packed with antioxidants and bioactive compounds. Nutritional scientist Professor Tim Spector has highlighted that besides blueberries, other seasonal berries also contain similar beneficial compounds at a more affordable price.

Spector emphasised the importance of polyphenols found in blueberries, which are beneficial for stomach health, reducing inflammation in the body, and helping prevent conditions such as dementia, arthritis, and diabetes. Moreover, blueberries are a rich source of vitamin C, which aids in lowering blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart disease, and preventing dementia. Sales of British blueberries have increased by 13% this year, reflecting growing consumer demand for healthy foods.

Neil Donaldson, commercial director at Hall Hunter, the UK’s leading blueberry grower, noted the surging popularity of blueberries across different age groups, making them a staple in many households. British growers supply approximately one-tenth of the 60,000 tonnes of blueberries consumed in the UK annually, with the remainder being imported from countries such as Poland, Peru, or Chile. Despite challenging conditions for growers, British blueberries have gained favour due to their quality and health benefits.
