A new study has found that a supplement costing as little as 5p per dose can significantly impact individuals genetically predisposed to high cholesterol. Omega 3, popular for various health benefits including aiding blood pressure and diabetes, was the subject of this research. The University of Georgia study, detailed in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, analysed genetic data from over 441,000 participants to predict the likelihood of high cholesterol levels. Researchers discovered that individuals taking fish oil supplements had lower blood lipid levels than predicted, particularly in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Kaixiong Ye, the study’s corresponding author, highlighted that fish oil supplements may mitigate the genetic risk of high cholesterol.
High cholesterol poses health risks such as arterial hardening, increasing the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes. For individuals with a family history of high cholesterol, the study indicated that taking fish oil could promote a healthier lipid profile by boosting levels of “good” cholesterol. Additionally, the research noted that fish oil supplements were beneficial in raising HDL cholesterol levels. The supplement, endorsed by health expert Dr. Michael Mosley, who advocated for its consumption, can be acquired at a cost of around 5p per day for 360 doses, making it an affordable health investment.
Dr. Amina Hersi, a general practitioner, emphasised the importance of omega 3 supplementation, particularly for individuals who may not obtain sufficient amounts from dietary sources like oily fish.
