A nurse from St Helens, Merseyside, Chloe Stirling, 29, discovered she had an aggressive cancer after what she initially thought was just acid reflux turned out to be much more serious. She had been experiencing heartburn after eating spicy or greasy food, which she attributed to acid reflux and took anti-acids to manage. However, after 16 months, her symptoms worsened, leading to severe pains and difficulty eating.
Following a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma, a type of stomach cancer, Chloe underwent four rounds of chemotherapy before surgeons removed her entire stomach and several lymph nodes in a six-hour surgery on August 5. Fortunately, two weeks later, she received the news that the surgery had been successful, and she was cancer-free.
Chloe’s journey began in July 2022 when she started experiencing heartburn, which escalated to pain and vomiting by November 2023. Despite initially dismissing it as just heartburn, she persisted in seeking answers, suspecting something more serious. Eventually, a biopsy revealed she had poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma.
Chloe’s experience serves as a crucial reminder for others to advocate for their health and not ignore persistent symptoms. She advises individuals to seek medical attention if reflux symptoms persist and not to assume they are immune to serious conditions due to their age. Chloe emphasises the importance of being proactive and persistent in addressing health concerns as early detection can significantly impact outcomes.
Having her stomach removed posed challenges for Chloe in adjusting to a new way of eating and digesting food. Despite these adjustments, she remains grateful for the successful surgery that rid her of cancer. Chloe’s story highlights the importance of listening to one’s body, seeking medical advice, and staying vigilant about one’s health, even when symptoms seem minor.
As Chloe reflects on her journey, she hopes her experience will encourage others to take action when they suspect something is wrong, underscoring that cancer does not discriminate based on age and that early detection can make a life-saving difference. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance and advocating for one’s health in the face of challenges.
