A recent study indicates that carrying excess fat around the waist may lead to chronic pain in various parts of the body, particularly for women. The research, involving data from 32,409 individuals in the UK Biobank study, highlighted a correlation between abdominal fat, pain, and inflammation. The participants, with an average age of 55 and half of whom were women, underwent MRI scans to assess fat levels around their abdominal organs and under the skin.
After completing questionnaires and health assessments, participants reported pain in areas such as the neck, shoulders, back, hips, and knees for over three months. Two years later, a follow-up revealed that individuals with more abdominal fat were more likely to report chronic pain. Moreover, those with a higher body mass index (BMI) faced an increased risk of pain, with women experiencing more severe effects than men.
In a report published in the journal Regional Anaesthesia And Pain Medicine, researchers suggested that reducing abdominal fat could be a target for managing chronic pain, especially for individuals with pain in multiple areas. The study proposed a link between fat accumulation, inflammation, and pain perception, indicating that lower levels of body fat may alleviate pain symptoms by reducing inflammation’s impact on the nervous system.
The findings offer valuable insights into potential strategies for pain management, particularly for individuals struggling with chronic pain in multiple sites. By understanding the relationship between abdominal fat, inflammation, and pain, healthcare professionals can develop targeted interventions to improve individuals’ quality of life.
