One high-protein food is ‘ruining your gut health’ says expert – Wales Online

One high-protein food, alongside other supplements, can cause problems, according to one expert, as highlighted by Wales Online. Finding what’s good for your stomach can be tricky when you’re trying to fuel up for a workout. Although great for gains, gym favourites like protein bars, shakes, and pre-workout drinks might not always sit right with your gut. Despite their popularity, these products can lead to discomfort or even bloating for some individuals.

Gut health expert Chris Dubberley from Incontinence Shop has shared his guidance and recommendations on this matter. Regarding protein bars, Chris warns that they are often packed with isolated fibres and sugars that don’t digest well, fermenting in the gut to cause bloating, gas, or diarrhoea. Ingredients like chicory root fibre and maltitol, commonly found in these bars, can be particularly troubling for individuals with sensitive stomachs. Chris advises athletes to be mindful of consuming protein bars to avoid digestive issues during exercise, suggesting opting for bars with whole ingredients and minimal added sugars to support gut health.

In regard to whey protein powder, Chris emphasises that a varied diet is essential for maintaining healthy gut flora. Overloading on protein powder can disrupt the gut’s microbial balance, especially with added sugars and flavourings that may disturb blood sugar levels and promote harmful bacteria growth in the gut. While protein is crucial for muscle repair, relying too heavily on supplements could result in a fibre-deficient diet and poor gut health.

For individuals using pre-workout supplements, the mix of ingredients, including artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and caffeine, can vary widely and may irritate some people’s stomachs. It’s important to listen to your body and adjust accordingly, as everyone’s digestive system is different.

On a positive note, creatine is highlighted as beneficial for gut health, providing energy to gut cells to fend off damage from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), reducing inflammation, and bolstering the gut’s defences. This support can lead to less discomfort and a healthier gut by keeping the gut barrier strong and preventing unwanted substances from entering the bloodstream.
