A tech security expert has advised that one phone setting should always be turned off in public to prevent personal information exposure to hackers. Nazar Kvartalnyi, a tech expert from software development company Inoxoft, has highlighted the risks of leaving Bluetooth switched on, especially in crowded locations like airports, shopping malls, and public transport.
According to Nazar, Bluetooth can be a convenient tool for quick connections, but it can also pose a security threat in busy areas. Hackers exploit Bluetooth to identify vulnerabilities in a phone’s security system, with ‘Bluejacking’ being a common type of attack where hackers access a device surreptitiously. By simply being in close proximity, hackers can access sensitive data such as contacts, messages, and photos without the user’s knowledge, putting them at risk of identity theft.
Hackers scan for open Bluetooth signals in public spaces to target nearby devices, enabling them to send unwanted messages, install malware, or seize control of a phone. Nazar emphasises that leaving Bluetooth on when not in use, such as for connecting to headphones or a car, can invite hackers to target the device. Even with improved security features on Apple and Android phones, outdated software versions or devices remain vulnerable to cyber-attacks.
The expert recommends turning off Bluetooth if not actively using it and regularly updating the phone’s operating system to implement the latest security patches for protection against potential breaches.
Maintaining awareness of cybersecurity risks and taking preventive measures, such as disabling unnecessary settings, can help safeguard personal data in public environments.
