A parent at Trallwng Infants School in Pontypridd, Wales, has raised concerns over the proposed closure of the school by Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council. The parent, Laurie Dodd, expressed that the closure plan seems to prioritize financial considerations over what is best for the children. With an online petition garnering over 1,000 signatures in opposition to the closure, Laurie highlighted the positive impact the school has had on students, citing outstanding teaching, personal care for students’ wellbeing, and recent investments into facilities such as a sensory room and child-friendly kitchen.
Laurie questioned the rationale behind the move to close Trallwng Infants School, especially considering the positive Estyn inspection report it received and the challenges faced by the proposed receiving school, Coedpenmaen Primary. She expressed concerns about the transfer process and urged for a thorough investigation into Coedpenmaen’s suitability for the children. Laurie stressed that the closure decision should not only be about financial efficiency but also about the children’s wellbeing and quality of education.
In response, an RCT Council spokesperson emphasised the comprehensive evaluation process involved in school reorganization proposals. The council highlighted that Trallwng Infants School has experienced a significant decrease in pupil numbers, falling below capacity. They pointed out the school building’s condition rating, backlog maintenance costs, and the need for further investments to meet modern education standards. The spokesperson reassured that Coedpenmaen Primary School has the capacity and has shown improvement to accommodate the transferring students effectively.
The Council representative urged community participation in the consultation process before a final decision is made, referencing projected pupil numbers and the need for sustainable educational provision in the area. They stressed the importance of considering all factors, including facilities, teaching quality, and capacity, to ensure the best outcome for the students. As stakeholders continue to engage in the consultation until November 15, the fate of Trallwng Infants School remains a subject of deliberation and contention within the local community.
