Parents who have experienced the loss of a baby early in pregnancy will now be able to apply to have their child’s life officially recognised regardless of how much time has passed. The Government has announced an extension of the baby loss certificate scheme, which was launched in February for those who had experienced a loss since September 2018. Over 50,000 documents have been issued so far, and there will no longer be a time limit on the initiative. Certificates will now be available for any parent who has experienced a loss before 24 weeks, or 28 weeks if the loss occurred before October 1992.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed the importance of acknowledging the existence of these babies and their significance in their parents’ lives. The initiative aims to provide bereaved parents with the option to officially recognise their babies, regardless of when the loss occurred. Vicki Robinson, chief executive of the charity Miscarriage Association, welcomed the scheme’s extension to include losses before 2018, highlighting its meaningful impact on the grieving process for those who have experienced pregnancy loss.
The baby loss certificate scheme was established following the recommendations of the independent Pregnancy Loss Review published in 2023. Samantha Collinge, bereavement lead midwife, described the extension as a significant milestone, emphasising the need for standardized care pathways to support parents experiencing baby loss. The move aims to offer all bereaved parents official recognition of their babies’ existence and the importance of their brief lives.
The initiative has received positive feedback from various sources, indicating the positive impact it has had on those who have experienced pregnancy loss. The government’s commitment to listening to women and families and enhancing the health system to provide compassionate and personalised care has been emphasised. This extension of the baby loss certificate scheme reflects a step towards greater support and recognition for parents navigating the difficult journey of pregnancy loss.
