People in certain parts of Wales are being offered financial incentives of up to £5,000 to return and live in Welsh-speaking heartlands. The ‘Ymgartrefu’ initiative, part of efforts to strengthen the Welsh language in key counties like Gwynedd, Anglesey, Ceredigion, and Carmarthenshire, is providing families with support to relocate back to the ARFOR region. Assistance covers expenses such as transportation, housing, childcare, and Welsh language courses.
One beneficiary, Huw Brassington, who hails from Gwynedd but was living in Cumbria, expressed his gratitude for the grant, which facilitated his decision to move back to Wales. Planning to create job opportunities in North Wales, Huw highlighted the positive impact of the scheme on creating employment in the region. Another recipient, Sioned Meleri Evans, has returned to Carmarthenshire to work locally after receiving assistance from the initiative.
The aim of the Ymgartrefu initiative, alongside other programmes like Llwyddo’n Lleol Gyrfaol, is to encourage young individuals and families who have left to consider returning by showcasing promising job prospects in their home communities. Through these efforts, individuals are being urged to settle in their home regions, fostering economic growth and community development.
Applicants for these schemes must meet specific criteria, including being part of a couple or family with at least one adult under 35, having ties to ARFOR regions like Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Gwynedd, or Anglesey, and showing a willingness to learn Welsh if not fluent.
