People with one condition more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, according to a new study. The research suggests that individuals with asthma are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, while those with type 2 diabetes are also more likely to develop asthma. The connection between the two conditions is not fully understood, and researchers have highlighted the need for further investigation.
The study, conducted by academics in Taiwan, involved a meta-analysis of 17 million people from 14 studies across various countries. The findings revealed that individuals with type 2 diabetes had an 83% increased likelihood of developing asthma compared to those without diabetes. Similarly, individuals with asthma were 28% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those without asthma.
The severity of asthma was also linked to a higher risk of diabetes, indicating a complex relationship between the two conditions. Dr. Nam Nguyen of Taipei Medical University highlighted the importance of creating awareness among patients and healthcare providers. He suggested that preventive strategies should be considered to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes in individuals with asthma.
The study also found that conditions such as high blood pressure and abnormal levels of fat in the blood were associated with an increased risk of both asthma and type 2 diabetes. Diabetes UK estimates that 4.4 million people in the UK are living with diabetes, with 1.2 million potentially undiagnosed cases.
Dr. Nguyen emphasised the need for further research to better understand the link between asthma and type 2 diabetes, given the increasing prevalence of both conditions globally. The study’s implications could lead to improved clinical practices and preventive measures for individuals at risk.
The findings from this research will be presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) annual meeting in Madrid. The study underscores the importance of addressing the health implications of conditions like asthma and type 2 diabetes to reduce their impact on individuals’ quality of life and the healthcare system.
