Plans have been revealed for the first phase of a significant housing project in Cardiff Bay that could potentially introduce over 1,000 new homes to the area. The Cardiff Peninsula scheme’s initial stage proposes the construction of 77 senior living apartments on the Cardiff International Swimming Pool car park. This forms part of the broader masterplan that encompasses a mix of apartments, townhouses, co-living apartments, a luxury hotel, and commercial spaces.
The Cardiff Peninsula Consortium, led by Orion Land and Leisure, assumed responsibility for the project in September 2023 after being appointed by Cardiff Council. The consortium recently submitted plans for plot one of the scheme following a consultation phase that updated the masterplan in May 2024. The senior living apartments are designed to include one-bedroom and two-bedroom options, alongside amenities such as parking spaces, cycle facilities, and communal outdoor spaces.
The development site, located near Cardiff International Sports Village, has sat vacant for several years despite earlier plans for a more extensive residential and recreational complex. The current proposal aims to activate the area by commencing construction on plot one in the second quarter of 2025. In the interim, the consortium plans to introduce leisure and sporting facilities to the site to enhance community engagement during the extended planning and building stages.
The Cardiff Peninsula project signifies a significant step towards revitalising the unused space and delivering much-needed housing options to Cardiff Bay residents. Pending approval, the project’s initial phase is anticipated to bring new life to the area and begin realising the long-standing vision for a vibrant and inclusive community in this waterfront locale.
