A pregnant woman travelling on a British Airways flight claimed she was threatened by a fellow passenger. Parul Patel, 35, reported being assaulted while on a flight from Amsterdam to London when a man allegedly shoved her and threatened to punch her in the face. Patel, who was 11 weeks pregnant at the time, stated that the passenger wrongly accused her of queue jumping. Despite reporting the incident to airline staff, Patel felt that her concerns were not adequately addressed, with the resolution offered being a bottle of champagne as an apology.
Patel, a business analyst from Watford, Hertfordshire, was travelling with her partner, Dhiren Raghvani, on August 19 when the altercation took place. The situation became tense as the man continued to verbally assault Patel with threats and abusive language. Subsequently, Patel felt intimidated and fearful of the passenger’s aggressive behaviour. Following the incident, Patel approached the airline for further assistance but was only offered a £50 voucher, which she found inadequate given the seriousness of the assault.
In a distressing turn of events, Patel encountered the same passenger at the airport arrivals hall, where the confrontation escalated further. The police were unable to take action despite the repeated threats and aggression. Patel expressed feeling scared for her safety and that of her unborn child due to the incident. She highlighted the emotional impact of the encounter, stating that she struggled to sleep for a week following the ordeal. Patel emphasised that the violence against women made her question her safety and the response from authorities.
British Airways responded by stating that they do not tolerate abuse towards passengers or staff members and that the incident had been reported to the police. The Metropolitan Police confirmed receiving a report of the altercation at Heathrow Airport on August 19 but stated that, based on the information available, they decided not to investigate further. The police also mentioned that two independent witnesses did not support Patel’s version of events. Despite the lack of legal action, Patel continued to express her disappointment with how the situation was handled and the impact it had on her sense of security.
