Second death confirmed as Nipah virus breaks out in India

A second death has been confirmed as the Nipah virus outbreak sweeps through India, with a 24-year-old student succumbing to the highly infectious bat-borne virus. The Nipah virus is known for causing severe fever and brain inflammation, proving lethal to over half of those infected. Designated as a “priority pathogen” by the World Health Organisation due to its high mortality rate and potential for rapid spread through human contact and consumption of contaminated fruit, the Nipah virus has raised alarm among health officials. A previous outbreak in Kerala, India in 2018 resulted in an alarming 90% death rate, underscoring the urgency of containing the virus.

The recent incident has led to more than 200 individuals in Kerala being quarantined after potential exposure to the infected student. Schools have been closed and mask mandates enforced as a precautionary measure, given the student’s visits to multiple hospitals prior to his death, raising concerns about further spread of the virus. The infected student, who resided near Wandoor in Kerala, marks the second Nipah virus-related death in the region following a 14-year-old boy’s demise earlier in June. Over 200 individuals and healthcare workers are now being monitored for possible virus transmission, with five individuals suspected of carrying the Nipah virus under close observation by Kerala health authorities.

Despite a majority of those tested returning negative for the virus, health authorities remain vigilant, with the potential for further cases yet to manifest. The Nipah virus, primarily carried by fruit-eating bats, presents with initial symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, vomiting, sore throat, and headaches before progressing to severe encephalitis, causing breathing difficulties, delirium, and coma in patients. The virus poses a considerable public health threat due to its incubation period of up to 45 days, possibility of relapse, and significant fatality rate estimated between 40% to 75%.

As efforts continue to contain the Nipah virus outbreak in India, health officials stress the importance of vigilance and preventative measures to curb the spread of the deadly virus. The situation remains fluid as authorities work to track, isolate, and treat potential cases to prevent further fatalities.
