A woman who had travelled to the city in search of a cleaning job was instead lured into a trap by a gang, who imprisoned her in a flat and exploited her, depriving her of her human rights. The shocking incident came to light when dramatic footage released by Greater Manchester Police showed the moment they raided a flat in Oldham, where the gang was holding the woman captive.
The gang had tricked the victim, a young mother from Romania, into coming to the UK with promises of a well-paid cleaning job. However, upon her arrival, she was coerced into sex work and forced to have sex with multiple men every night. The victim recounted being threatened and manipulated by the gang members, who exploited her vulnerability and subjected her to horrific conditions.
The case came to light on January 27 when a friend of the victim received a message indicating her distress. This prompted a swift police response, leading to the arrest of several gang members, including Stefan Boeru, Dan Scurtu, and Gheorghe Rusu, who were involved in the trafficking and exploitation of the victim.
Following a meticulous investigation, a special police unit, codenamed Operation Hollow, managed to gather evidence and track down the gang members involved in the heinous crimes. Subsequently, the gang members were apprehended, charged, and sentenced for their despicable actions.
The perpetrators, including Anisoara Stan, Victor-Viorel Stan, Gheorghe Rusu, Dan Scurtu, Daniel Dobrin, and Stefan Boeru, were handed varying prison sentences for offences related to human trafficking and controlling prostitution for gain. Detective Chief Inspector Andy Fink of Oldham CID commended the victim for her bravery and resilience throughout the investigation, emphasising the importance of combating modern slavery and holding perpetrators accountable.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of modern slavery in society and the critical need to address such criminal activities. The victim has since been repatriated and is receiving the necessary support to heal from the trauma inflicted upon her by the gang members. The successful prosecution of the offenders signifies a significant step towards seeking justice for victims of exploitation and human trafficking.
As authorities continue to combat modern slavery and protect vulnerable individuals from falling prey to criminal networks, efforts are ongoing to dismantle such illegal operations and ensure the safety and well-being of all members of society.
