Shoppers upset after spotting ‘disappointing’ change to classic Christmas chocolate

Tesco shoppers have expressed their frustration over a significant change to a beloved Christmas chocolate offering, labelling the alteration as ‘disappointing’. The controversy emerged when Jacqui shared a photo on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group, showcasing a promotional display at her local Tesco store featuring festive chocolate assortments. The assortment included popular choices like Celebrations, Heroes, Quality Street, and Roses, all of which were reduced from their usual £6 price to a more affordable £3.95 for Clubcard holders.

However, consumers were quick to notice a distinct difference in the products. This issue is not new, as similar complaints have been voiced annually. While some shoppers appreciated the discounted price and notified others to take advantage of the offer, many pointed out that the tubs had decreased in size. One dissatisfied customer remarked, “It used to be a celebration buying them but the size is much smaller now. A disappointment!” Another shopper expressed, “Wow look how small they are! Better off buying multi-packs of chocolates and making your own chocolate hamper instead!”

The University of Birmingham experts explained the common practice of ‘shrinkflation’ affecting chocolate selections, where pack sizes reduce while prices remain the same or even increase. The Mirror conducted an analysis last Christmas, revealing the shrinkage in brands such as Quality Street, Celebrations, and Roses over the years and its impact on the quantity of chocolates. Mars Wrigley, the company behind these chocolates, acknowledged the size reduction was necessary to manage escalating costs while assuring consumers that quality and taste would be maintained. Alongside reducing the number of sweets, Mars Wrigley also reduced the tub size to lessen plastic use in the packaging.

The ongoing ‘shrinkflation’ trend in festive chocolates has left shoppers feeling shortchanged, prompting mixed reactions and disappointment among consumers. As the holiday season approaches, the debate over downsized chocolates continues to fuel discussions amongst Tesco shoppers and chocolate enthusiasts alike.
