The Welsh Government has announced plans to build six new railway stations in Wales by 2030 as part of major public transport improvements for the region. The stations, to be constructed in and around Newport, will serve as an alternative to the scrapped M4 relief road project. Construction on the new stations is set to begin in 2026, with three stations planned between Cardiff Central and Newport, and an additional three stations, including a unique “walkway” station in Monmouthshire, between Newport and Severn Tunnel Junction.
Welsh Government’s cabinet secretary for transport, Ken Skates, highlighted that these new stations will facilitate millions of additional train journeys annually and will be part of a significant transformational project for Newport and its neighbouring areas. While the specific order of station construction is yet to be determined, the Welsh Government aims to complete the first station by 2027 and the final one by 2030.
In addition to the new stations, the Welsh Government also outlined other transport upgrades for Newport, including the transformation of Newport’s main railway station into an interchange for buses and trains by 2026. Plans also include reconfiguring Old Green Roundabout near Newport city centre, creating a sustainable transport corridor along the A48 between Cardiff and Newport, enhancing the NCN88 cycle route, and improving walking and cycling access to Severn Tunnel Junction from nearby villages. The entire project is estimated to cost £810 million, with contributions from both the Welsh and UK governments.
The decision to focus on public transport improvements comes after the abandonment of the M4 relief road project in 2019 due to cost and environmental concerns. The Burns Commission, led by Lord Terry Burns, recommended prioritising public transport enhancements as a more viable solution for residents and commuters. Criticism from the Welsh Conservatives’ shadow transport minister, Natasha Asghar, highlighted the need for more immediate relief to address road congestion issues in the region.
