Making ‘Two Changes’ at Breakfast Could Slash High Blood Pressure Levels
Many adults in the UK are unaware they have high blood pressure, a silent condition that can lead to serious health risks like heart attacks and strokes. The food we consume plays a crucial role in blood pressure management, with diets high in salt known to elevate levels. However, certain food choices can help lower blood pressure, starting with breakfast.
According to British Heart Foundation (BHF) senior dietitian, Victoria Taylor, making simple changes to your breakfast routine can significantly impact blood pressure. Swapping white bread for wholemeal bread is her first recommendation. Whole grains like brown rice and oats offer more nutrients and fibre compared to refined starchy carbs like white bread. Soluble fibre from oats can aid in blood pressure reduction, making a fibre-rich diet essential for weight loss and blood pressure control.
In addition to whole grains, increasing consumption of beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables can enhance fibre intake and promote heart health. Taylor also suggests opting for low-fat dairy products such as semi-skimmed milk and low-fat natural yoghurt. These dairy options provide essential nutrients like calcium, linked to blood pressure reduction, without excess saturated fat.
Including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins like chicken and fish, while avoiding salty, sugary, fatty foods, alcohol, and excess caffeine, can further help in managing blood pressure. Consulting a GP is advisable if concerned about blood pressure levels. By making these adjustments to your breakfast, you can take proactive steps towards lowering your blood pressure and safeguarding your health.
