The UK passport holders face travel woes due to strict EU regulations, resulting in around 200 travellers being denied boarding on their flights daily. These regulations, following Brexit, require UK passports to be issued within the last ten years and validity for at least three months past the return date. Travellers with older burgundy passports are especially at risk due to discrepancies in issue dates, causing some passports to extend beyond the ten-year limit.
Simon Calder, a travel expert, estimates that more than 100,000 holidays could be affected annually by these rules. To avoid disappointments, he urges airlines to enhance information provided to passengers, particularly during online check-ins completed weeks before departure. If denied boarding due to passport issues, travellers are not covered and are not entitled to refunds, emphasising the passenger’s responsibility for compliance.
The UK Government states that obtaining a new passport typically takes three weeks, though it could be longer with additional requirements or interviews. Urgent requests can be processed within a week. Passports issued from mid-2020 onwards are dark blue, and renewal applications can be made online or by post. It’s crucial for all travellers to meet the EU’s passport validity requirements to ensure smooth travel experiences.
