A new community support centre has been opened in Port Talbot to assist those impacted by job losses at the Tata Steel site. The facility, situated in the Aberafan Shopping Centre, was inaugurated on October 9 following the recent closure of the site’s blast furnaces, affecting nearly 3,000 employees with potential redundancies. The centre, initiated by the Community Union with financial backing from the Welsh Government, aims to offer help and guidance to Tata and supply chain workers, their families, and other affected businesses.
Services at the support centre include aiding individuals in securing new job opportunities and acquiring skills in areas with available vacancies. They will also direct individuals towards assistance provided by the Employment Support Fund, supported by the UK Government’s allocation of £13.5m from the Tata Steel/Port Talbot Transition Board. The centre is now open to the public from Monday to Friday, offering support from various agencies such as Neath Port Talbot Employability, Careers Wales, UKSE, and Acorn.
During a visit to the centre, Secretary of State for Wales and Chair of the Tata Transition Board, Jo Stevens, expressed determination to support affected workers and businesses. Stevens highlighted the collaborative efforts of governments, unions, and the local council to address the town’s needs. The funding from the UK Government through the transition board is already making a positive impact, with individuals successfully placed in new roles due to the £13.5m allocation.
Neath Port Talbot Council Leader Steve Hunt welcomed the new centre as a valuable addition to the support package developed by the transition board for Tata employees and their supply chain companies. The initiative aims to provide essential assistance to those navigating the challenges posed by the changes at Tata Steel.
