Teen driver dies as police fail to respond to automated iPhone crash alert

A tragic incident involving a 19-year-old named George Dillon highlights the importance of police response to automated crash alerts. Last year, Dillon crashed his car into a tree, triggering his iPhone’s ‘Crash Detection’ feature to automatically call 999. The call, indicating a serious crash with no response from Dillon, was missed by police as he did not answer their callback. Despite the alert, police did not attend the scene initially due to no distinct request and no noticeable background sounds in the call.

The coroner, Henry Charles, emphasised the need for better training and procedures for officers in handling such automated alerts that suggest a potential risk to life. Dillon’s tragic accident occurred in Romsey, near Southampton, where he suffered fatal injuries and passed away at Southampton General Hospital two days later. The inquest revealed concerns over the effectiveness of responding to automated calls, given the prevalence of false alarms and inaccuracies in location data from electronic devices.

In a report, Charles urged Hampshire Constabulary and the National Police Chiefs’ Council to enhance their understanding and response protocols for situations where automated alerts indicate a significant collision. The call for improvements stems from the need to prevent future tragedies and ensure timely and appropriate police intervention in life-threatening incidents. Charles highlighted the impact of emerging technologies like Apple’s car crash detection feature and the necessity for law enforcement agencies to adapt and effectively utilise such advancements to safeguard lives.

Moving forward, the call for action to prevent similar occurrences underscores the critical role of law enforcement in responding swiftly to emergency alerts generated by new technological capabilities. This incident underscores the importance of evolving police practices to effectively leverage modern tools for public safety and emergency response.
