Teenager becomes youngest person to swim Bristol Channel – then plays rugby the next morning

A teenager from Penarth has made history as the youngest person to swim the Bristol Channel. Harrison Owens, aged 15, completed the challenging charity swim in an impressive seven hours and 18 minutes. Starting his journey in Penarth and reaching Clevedon, Harrison expressed his disbelief at the accomplishment, highlighting the mental and physical challenges he faced during the swim.

Reflecting on his determination, Harrison credited the support of his sponsors and the thought of reaching the end with each stroke as motivators to push through the difficult moments. The swim covered approximately 25 kilometres, culminating in a celebratory curry with a friend after the arduous feat.

Rather than resting after the swim, Harrison showed his dedication by rising early the next morning to play rugby. Despite feeling exhausted during the match, he persevered before eventually retiring to the sidelines for some much-needed rest. The swim, which also served as a fundraiser for the Huntington’s Disease Association, was a testament to months of rigorous training and preparation.

Harrison’s family, especially his mother Debbie Blakey, played integral roles in supporting his endeavour, with Debbie overseeing the logistics and training. Acknowledging the teamwork behind his achievement, Harrison expressed gratitude to Epic Swim Co for training and providing a pilot boat, as well as Fortitude for their sponsorship.

The family’s collective effort was met with pride and joy as they celebrated Harrison’s record-breaking swim and successful fundraising initiative. Despite the challenges faced during the swim, including a pause for a passing cargo ship, Harrison’s unwavering commitment and resilience shone through, earning admiration from his peers and supporters.

Harrison’s remarkable achievement serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and fundraisers alike, showcasing the power of dedication, teamwork, and perseverance in reaching ambitious goals.
