A pensioner sexually assaulted a 19-year-old woman as she sat on a bench near Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen. Peter Smith exposed his penis, rubbed it against the teenager’s chest, and made sexual comments. The 70-year-old, who claimed he was urinating in the bushes, denied the offence and accused the woman of seeking attention. The judge sentenced Smith to eight months in prison, branding him a “devious man” capable of hiding his true nature.
The victim described Smith as a “dirty man” and expressed emotional and physical struggles since the assault, resulting in panic attacks and difficulty leaving her house alone. Smith, of Abergwili Road, Carmarthen, was convicted of sexual assault at a retrial. The court heard that Smith’s actions were premeditated, with the judge condemning his arrogance and attempts to discredit the victim.
The judge highlighted the lack of remorse from Smith, who was sentenced to prison and required to register as a sex offender for 10 years. The court noted the impact on the victim’s mental health, prompting the provision of support for survivors of sexual abuse from various organisations. These resources include helplines, advocacy services, and counselling for individuals affected by similar issues.
