A British teenager has shared a distressing experience where she was required to undress in front of airport officials in Egypt for a sex verification check after they questioned her gender. Caitlyn Disley, 15, faced the humiliating procedure upon arriving at Hurghada Airport. She was asked to expose herself to confirm her gender, with her family stating they were detained until the examination was completed by a nurse. After confirming her gender matched her passport, they were allowed to continue their journey, leaving Caitlyn deeply unsettled. She described feeling shocked and embarrassed by the ordeal, noting her shorter hairstyle was the only difference from her passport photo. Caitlyn expressed the trauma, saying, “It was traumatising and embarrassing. I’ve never been put through anything like that before.”
Caitlyn’s father, Tom Disley, felt it was important to share her story to alert others about potential distressing experiences in Egypt. He described the incident as “horrible” and highlighted its profound impact on Caitlyn upon their return to the UK. Tom recounted the distressing event, noting the tremendous distress his daughter experienced during the procedure. He emphasised the discomfort Caitlyn felt as two males demanded to examine her body and how it deeply affected her. Tom shared that the family had planned a holiday in Egypt with his daughter and her girlfriend, hoping for a peaceful break before school resumed. However, the trip took an unsettling turn after their arrival on August 25.
In Egypt, same-sex activities between men are illegal, with reports of discrimination and violence against LGBT individuals. Tom stressed the need to raise awareness about such incidents that British travellers could face in Egypt. The family has sought support from their MP, Lisa Nandy, who plans to address the matter with the relevant government authority. A spokesperson from the Foreign Office stated that they are available to assist British nationals abroad in various circumstances. The Egyptian consulate in London has been contacted for a response to the incident.
Caitlyn’s story underscores the importance of respecting individual dignity and privacy during security screenings, especially in situations that can be traumatising. Such incidents highlight the need for sensitivity and adherence to established protocols to avoid causing unnecessary distress to travellers. The Disley family’s ordeal serves as a cautionary tale for travellers and authorities alike, emphasising the necessity of upholding privacy and respect for individuals during security procedures to prevent similar distressing experiences in the future.
