Tesco customers can get cancer symptom checked at special store events

Tesco customers in Wales now have the opportunity to get advice on possible cancer symptoms while they shop, thanks to a new partnership with Cancer Research UK. As part of the campaign announced recently, shoppers can engage with one of the supermarket’s in-store pharmacists to discuss what steps to take if they have noticed any worrying signs related to cancer. The initiative aims to enhance awareness of potential cancer symptoms, eradicate barriers individuals may face when communicating with healthcare professionals, and empower customers to feel more at ease when discussing their health with their doctor.

With pharmacists increasingly playing a significant role in providing access to healthcare services, Tesco’s collaboration with Cancer Research UK involves training their pharmacists to offer specialised support to visitors. Research by Cancer Research UK has revealed that about half of individuals experiencing possible signs of cancer delayed contacting their GP within six months due to various reasons, such as difficulty in securing appointments, concerns about burdening the NHS, and reluctance to cause a fuss. Early diagnosis of cancer is crucial, as the chances of successful treatment and survival significantly increase when the disease is detected at an early stage.

According to Cancer Research UK’s data, nearly one in two people will develop cancer at some point in their lives, underscoring the importance of early detection. For instance, over 90% of individuals with bowel cancer, one of the most common cancers, survive the disease for five years or more if diagnosed at an early stage, compared to just one in ten when diagnosed at an advanced stage. To support the health campaign, which runs from September 16-29, Tesco will provide resources and prompts encouraging customers to be mindful of their symptoms and consult in-store pharmacists for additional guidance. Customers can opt for a confidential discussion with a pharmacist in a consultation room while shopping or schedule an appointment via Tesco.com/pharmacy.

Paul Pilkington, Tesco’s Head of Pharmacy, emphasized the significance of seeking advice promptly on concerning symptoms to facilitate quicker cancer diagnoses and improved outcomes. Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, highlighted the project’s importance in facilitating early diagnosis, ultimately saving lives. This cancer awareness initiative aligns with Tesco’s commitment to enhancing public health in partnership with charitable organisations tackling prevalent health conditions affecting the UK population, including heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

The collaboration between Tesco and Cancer Research UK underscores their dedication to supporting public health by providing convenient access to vital health information and assistance through trained pharmacists in a comfortable setting. By raising awareness of cancer symptoms and encouraging early intervention, this initiative aims to make a meaningful impact on individuals’ health outcomes, exemplifying the value of community partnerships in advancing public health initiatives.
