Tesco has experienced a surprising boom in sales of one particular item following a decline during lockdown periods. Premium bouquets have seen a surge of nearly 25% in sales at the UK supermarket, marking a comeback after a lull in flower-giving activity due to Covid restrictions. Over the past six months, Tesco has witnessed a significant increase in demand for flowers, with a particular rise of almost 25% observed for its top-tier Finest bouquets.
The supermarket chain’s primary supplier, MM Flowers, located in Alconbury, Cambridgeshire, has also reported a rise in demand, especially for premium bouquets. The company has seen a volume growth of more than 10% in the last 13 weeks, translating to an increase of over five million bouquets annually across its operations. Recent data indicates that consumers are now spending more on flowers than they have in the past two years.
Tesco’s flower buyer, Ryan Daley, commented on the resurgence in sales, noting that the trend suggests a return to romantic gestures as individuals lavish their loved ones with beautiful bouquets. He highlighted the decrease in flower gifting during the Covid lockdowns, explaining that it has taken time to reach pre-pandemic levels. MM Flowers’ group product and marketing director, Nikki Rider, expressed delight in observing people acknowledging the value that flowers bring to homes and relationships.
Among the most popular Finest range bouquets purchased at Tesco in the last half-year are the Fleur Bouquet, Antiqua, Rose and Lily Bouquet, Florence Bouquet, and Ray Of Sunshine. These offerings have captured the hearts of customers with their premium quality and captivating arrangements. The resurgence in flower sales reflects a shift towards cherishing moments and spreading joy through the beauty of blooms.
The increase in demand for premium bouquets not only signifies a return to gifting rituals but also indicates a willingness to celebrate and connect with loved ones through thoughtful gestures. As sales continue to rise, both Tesco and MM Flowers are optimistic about the enduring appeal of floral gifts in bringing happiness and positivity to daily life.
