Teachers, doctors, and civil servants in Wales will see pay rises between 5% and 6% in the 2024-25 financial year. The pay increases, affecting a significant number of workers in Wales, will be retroactive to the start of the payment year in each sector. Civil servants and employees at various public entities are set to receive a 5% raise, while teachers will enjoy a 5.5% increase. Similarly, NHS staff under “Agenda for Change” terms will also receive a 5.5% pay rise. Additionally, doctors, including GPs and junior doctors, will benefit from a 6% pay bump, with junior doctors receiving an extra £1,000 per year.
The pay rises are aligned with the respective pay years for each profession or employer, with the academic year for teachers running from September to August. These pay adjustments exceed the recommendations put forth by the Independent Welsh Pay Review Body. First Minister Eluned Morgan expressed satisfaction with being able to implement these increases amidst challenging economic conditions. However, she acknowledged that tough decisions lie ahead in preparing for the 2025-26 budget.
Trade unions will need to agree to the proposed pay raises, with a four-week consultation period planned. Welsh treasury officials anticipate funding the salary adjustments with additional funds resulting from pay rises in public sectors in England. Notably, sectors such as local government staff, fire and rescue services, and social care negotiate pay separately from independent review bodies.
The recommended 6% increase for independent contractor GPs and dentists is contingent on overall contract modifications for general medical and dental services, as per previous agreements. The pay rises are a welcomed boost for public sector employees in Wales, underlining the commitment to support essential workers through fair remuneration.
