A pest control expert in south Wales has highlighted a concerning increase in cockroach infestations in the region. Gareth Davies, with 34 years of experience in pest control, noted a significant rise in cockroach incidents this summer compared to the previous decade. He attributes this surge to increased travel into the country and individuals attempting DIY pest treatments.
Davies shared details of a particularly shocking job in Cathays, Cardiff, where he encountered hundreds of cockroaches emerging from various places in a property. He expressed astonishment at the scale of the infestation, emphasising how challenging it is to eradicate cockroaches due to their reproductive habits.
The pest controller observed a trend of infestations in houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) and near restaurants in Cardiff. He explained a scenario in an HMO where numerous cockroaches were present, likely brought in unknowingly by residents from various parts of the world. Davies stressed the importance of prompt professional pest treatment to prevent such issues from escalating.
Besides cockroaches, Davies mentioned facing difficulties in treating flea infestations, mainly caused by pet owners attempting self-treatment. He advised against such practices and highlighted the rapid reproduction of fleas under ineffective treatment methods.
Davies urged vigilance against pests like cockroaches due to the health risks they pose, including the spread of diseases like salmonella. He recommended maintaining cleanliness, proper waste management, and seeking professional pest control services promptly upon noticing any signs of infestation.
