A new housing estate with 214 homes has been completed in the east of Cardiff, as shown in the latest pictures. The Aspen Grove estate, located on the former site of Eastern High School in Rumney, is part of Cardiff Council’s Cardiff Living programme. Planning permission for the homes was granted in January 2019, and after years of construction, the project has come to fruition.
The estate comprises a mix of two, three, four, and five-bedroom homes, including 65 council homes and 149 properties for private sale. Both types of homes feature modern amenities such as ground source heat pumps, PV panels, battery storage, electric vehicle charging points, and intelligent energy systems. These sustainable features aim to help residents save on energy bills and contribute to the city’s efforts in combating the housing crisis.
The completion of Aspen Grove comes as Cardiff Council faces a growing demand for housing, with around 8,000 individuals on the housing waiting list. In response to this need, the council has explored various solutions, including acquiring hotels and student accommodations to address the shortage of shelter. Plans are also underway to deliver 1,700 new homes across the city through the Cardiff Living initiative, in collaboration with partners like Wates.
Councillor Lynda Thorne, cabinet member for housing and communities, expressed pride in the new homes created at Aspen Grove. She highlighted the importance of providing affordable and high-quality housing options for residents, emphasising the council’s commitment to constructing over 4,000 new homes in the city in the coming years. The completion of the Aspen Grove estate marks a significant step towards meeting Cardiff’s housing needs and improving the quality of life for its residents.
