Drivers are still being caught out by a roundabout in Carmarthenshire, known as Trostre Roundabout, which has been dubbed ‘the magic roundabout’. Despite warnings, many motorists continue to misuse one of the exits, leading to hefty fines. Carmarthenshire Council reported making over half a million pounds in fines from drivers who used the bus lane in the roundabout between December 2022 and November 2023.
Signs clearly indicate the bus lane, but drivers are still falling foul of the restrictions. In a 12-month period, the council raked in £509,525 from fines at this roundabout alone, surpassing revenue from parking fines across the entire county. The site has been mockingly referred to as “the council’s magic roundabout” due to the high number of fines issued.
Despite the council’s efforts to educate drivers, the fines keep piling up. From January to July this year, 6,743 fines were issued, amounting to £249,537 in revenue. The council emphasises that motorists can appeal unjust fines and asserts that the funds raised contribute to public transport and road infrastructure improvements.
Councillor Edward Thomas of Carmarthenshire Council highlighted the importance of bus lanes in ensuring efficient traffic flow, especially in congested areas like Llanelli. He stressed that the money generated from fines is reinvested into enhancing local transport services and road facilities. The council stands by the enforcement of bus lane regulations to support sustainable public transport for residents’ well-being.
