The Welsh town of Penarth has seen an increase in violent crime, as reported by South Wales Police statistics. Conservative councillor for Plymouth ward, Cllr Rhys Thomas, highlighted concern over the rise in reports of violence against the person crimes in the town. Police data revealed that there were 93 reported crimes in August 2023, which escalated to 110 reports in July 2024. The ward of Plymouth experienced the highest surge in reported crimes, with violence and sexual offences, and anti-social behaviour being the most frequently reported incidents.
Moreover, all three wards in Penarth witnessed a rise in reported crimes in July 2024 compared to August 2023. In August 2024, there were 52 violence against the person crimes reported, indicating a concerning trend of escalating crime rates over the past few years. Cllr Rhys Thomas expressed worries about the persistent issue of shoplifting in Penarth and called for stronger action from the Police and Crime Commissioner to address this challenge affecting local businesses.
The data further indicated that there were 11 reports of violence against the person crimes in Plymouth ward, with South Wales Police clarifying that none of these incidents resulted in serious injuries. The incidents included domestic harassment cases, harassment, attempted theft, domestic-related threats, and other offences. Cllr Rhys Thomas emphasised the need for a robust response from law enforcement and the criminal justice system to deter and penalise offenders, stressing the importance of ensuring safety and security in the community.
The statistics also reflected a general increase in crime across Penarth compared to previous years. From October to December 2021, there were 220 reported crimes, which rose to 259 reports from April to June 2024. Cllr Rhys Thomas condemned the escalating trend of violent crime in Penarth, expressing solidarity with the victims and advocating for decisive measures to address the situation effectively. He underlined the detrimental impact of shoplifting on local businesses and urged for concerted efforts to curb this issue.
Overall, the rise in violent crime and shoplifting in Penarth has raised concerns among residents and officials, highlighting the pressing need for proactive strategies to ensure community safety and combat criminal activities in the town.
