Residents of Cefn Coed, a village near Merthyr Tydfil, have been enduring three years of incessant roadworks due to the construction of the Heads of the Valleys road. The ongoing project, costing over £1 billion, aims to convert an 11-mile stretch of the A465 into a dual carriageway to enhance road safety and traffic flow. The roadworks have caused significant disruptions to the village, with residents experiencing damage to their properties and living conditions.
The construction works have led to multiple challenges for the residents. Business owners reported a decline in trade when a road bridge shut down in 2021, limiting access to the village. Residents have endured the constant noise of piledrivers, heavy machinery, and dust, impacting their daily lives. While some improvements have been made, such as the reopening of the road bridge and a reduction in construction near residential areas, several residents have faced property damage and loss of land, sparking concerns about fair compensation.
Darryl and Ann Wilkins, elderly residents of the village, have seen their home suffer from deep cracks and window damage attributed to the construction works. They expressed frustration over the lack of acknowledgement and proper remedy for the issues they have faced. Another resident, Mandy MacMillan, highlighted cracks in her home and the disturbance caused by ongoing construction activities. She also faced challenges in finding legal representation due to the involvement of the government in the project.
Furthermore, property owners like Ian Davies have struggled to negotiate fair compensation for the land taken for construction purposes. Despite receiving some compensation after prolonged efforts, he believes there’s a need for improved processes to ensure fair treatment of residents affected by such projects. Many residents have faced mental and physical strain due to the prolonged roadworks, emphasising the need for better communication and support for those impacted.
The Welsh Government, overseeing the project, has acknowledged the concerns raised by residents and construction firm Future Valleys. They have assured to work closely with individuals to address their issues.
