The M42 motorway has been rated as England’s worst by drivers due to reduced speed limits “for no apparent reason” and issues such as roadworks, potholes, and delays. Connecting Birmingham with other locations, the 40-mile motorway received a low satisfaction score of 56%, based on a survey of over 9,000 road users by watchdog Transport Focus. Complaints included variable speed limits not reflecting traffic conditions and directing drivers to reduce speed without clear justification.
In contrast, the M40 motorway, running between London and Birmingham, was identified as England’s most popular with a satisfaction score of 79%. The A19 road, linking Seaton Burn with Doncaster, was rated the best A road in the country with an 85% satisfaction score. National Highways, responsible for England’s motorways and major A roads, highlighted the importance of maintenance over new road construction based on road user feedback.
Transport Focus CEO Alex Robertson emphasised the need for safe and smooth journeys, noting a decline in overall satisfaction and journey times. Delays on National Highways’ roads reached record levels, with increased traffic and ongoing roadworks adding to the challenges. Despite over 96% of roads being in good condition, concerns remain about roadworks management and declining satisfaction with road surface quality.
The survey also revealed the top five and bottom five ranked motorways based on satisfaction scores, highlighting varying perceptions among road users. Overall, efforts are underway to improve road conditions and enhance the travel experience for motorists. National Highways assured ongoing investments in road maintenance to provide long-term benefits, prioritising driver satisfaction and safety on England’s road network.
