**Train Passengers Warned of Disruption as Major Station Closes for Metro Work**
Passengers are being warned of disruptions as a major station is set to close due to work on the South Wales Metro. Cardiff Queen Street, located in the city centre, will be closed on Sunday, August 25, as engineering work begins. As a result, a number of rail services will be affected by disruption, which is set to continue intermittently until November.
The South Wales Metro promises to be a “modern, efficient and sustainable” way of travelling. Since 2020, Transport for Wales (TfW) has undertaken major engineering and infrastructure work to upgrade the rail network in a bid to introduce new trains onto the south Wales network. Due to recent engineering work, a spokesperson for Transport for Wales has advised passengers to check their journey before they travel.
In a statement, the spokesperson said: “Transformation works will continue across the valley lines in preparation for the South Wales Metro and its connecting lines. TfW is advising all customers to check before they travel as rail replacement buses will be in operation.”
When will Cardiff Queen Street station be closed? Cardiff Queen Street railway station will be closed on Sunday, August 25. No services will run through this station. The following services are affected: Barry Island to Caerphilly / Rhymney services will terminate at Cardiff Central. Penarth to Cardiff Queen Street services will terminate at Cardiff Central. Services between Cardiff Central / Cardiff Bay and Pontypridd / Treherbert / Merthyr Tyfdil will be diverted. A replacement bus service will be in operation.
Additionally, there will be further closures on Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1. Engineering works on the Rhymney and Coryton lines will close the line to trains on both days. A rail replacement service will be in operation between Cardiff Central and Rhymney. Further engineering works are planned across a number of lines at the end of September, throughout October and early November.
The closures are happening due to major engineering and infrastructure work to upgrade the rail network. Transport for Wales aims to introduce new trains onto the south Wales network, creating a more reliable, faster, greener, and more accessible transport system.
Passengers can expect Transport for Wales to run more weekday and Sunday services than ever before, including more trains between various locations. The first phase of the South Wales Metro is set to be completed by the start of 2026. Transport for Wales hopes that by the completion, people living near these stations will have access to more frequent train services.
