Transport for Wales has witnessed a significant increase in passenger numbers, with the latest data showing a rise of 1.6 million passengers between April and June this year compared to the same period in 2023. The increase, which saw passenger numbers soar to 7.6 million, marks the largest year-on-year rise of any train operator in the UK. This growth can be attributed to the introduction of new larger trains and high-profile Principality Stadium concerts.
According to figures from the Office for Rail and Road, Transport for Wales experienced a 27% rise on its Wales and Borders network, surpassing the increases seen by other operators such as the TransPennine Express and the Elizabeth Line in London. While the Heathrow Express saw a decline of 12%, the overall UK passenger numbers rose by 7%, reaching 420 million.
The completion of the £1 billion electrification of the Core Valley lines into Cardiff is expected to further boost passenger growth for Transport for Wales. This enhancement will lead to increased service frequency and the introduction of larger trains and tram-trains. Despite the positive passenger numbers, the network is still below the pre-pandemic levels of 8.2 million passengers in Q2 of 2019.
Additional services on the Wrexham to Bidston line and new services from Ebbw Vale to Newport have contributed to the increased passenger numbers. Improved performance in terms of punctuality and reliability, with an 8.1% improvement in punctuality and a 3.2% reduction in cancellations compared to the previous year, have also positively impacted Transport for Wales.
Major events held in Cardiff, including concerts by Bruce Springsteen, Pink, Foo Fighters, and Taylor Swift at the Principality Stadium, have also played a significant role in attracting passengers. The growth in services from Chester to Manchester/Liverpool, Cardiff to Merthyr, and Cardiff to Swansea further highlights the positive momentum for Transport for Wales.
