Two-ingredient ‘slimy’ drink could lower cholesterol and boost gut health, doctor says

A two-ingredient concoction, dubbed ‘slimy’ by a doctor, is believed to have the potential to reduce cholesterol levels and improve gut health, according to a report by Wales Online. The unlikely mix of okra and water has garnered attention from health enthusiasts for its purported benefits. Okra, also known as lady’s fingers, is a fruit commonly used in various African and Indian dishes. Despite its slimy texture, the mucilage found in okra is said to be beneficial for health.

In a TikTok video shared by NHS surgeon Doctor Karan Raj to his five million followers, he explained the advantages of consuming okra water. Mucilage, the slimy substance present in okra, acts as a soluble dietary fibre and prebiotic. When mixed with water, mucilage forms a gel in the gut, promoting soft and regular bowel movements while aiding in maintaining feelings of fullness. Moreover, the mucilage is believed to help regulate cholesterol levels by binding to cholesterol during digestion.

One study published in the Global Journal of Medical Research: Interdisciplinary in 2014 supported the claim that mucilage in okra could assist in lowering cholesterol levels. The research indicated that mucilage aids in eliminating cholesterol from the body through the digestive system. Dr. Raj emphasized that although the benefits of okra can be obtained by consuming cooked okra rather than drinking okra water, the TikTok trend is relatively harmless and may offer some health advantages for those willing to bear its taste and texture.

The doctor recommended cutting okra into pieces and soaking them in water for several hours to maximise the mucilage content. Apart from okra, mucilage can also be found in chia seeds, flax seeds, psyllium husk, and aloe vera. While okra water might not suit everyone’s palate, its potential health benefits have piqued interest in the health and wellness community.
