Two M4 crashes caused delays of 30 minutes during rush hour as queues stretched for miles around Newport. The incidents occurred on both the east and westbound carriageways near junction 24, leading to significant tailbacks.
The first crash took place eastbound between J24 A449 (Coldra) and J23A A4810 (Magor Services) at around 7:30 am. Although all lanes reopened promptly, long delays persisted in the area, with some queues reaching up to 30 minutes. As traffic was gradually easing from this incident, a second crash occurred around 8:15 am on the westbound stretch. One lane was blocked from J24 A449 (Coldra) to J25 B4596 Caerleon Road (Caerleon), resulting in a 20-minute travel time.
Notably, a yellow weather warning was in effect, exacerbating the already poor driving conditions. Despite all lanes reopening, residual traffic remained, creating heavy congestion in both directions. Traffic Wales advised caution due to congestion around junction 24 following incidents on both carriageways.
