The final blast furnace at the Port Talbot steelworks is set to be shut down by the end of this month as part of a transition to a greener electric arc furnace. This shift will bring about numerous changes, including ceasing operations of coke ovens and altering the delivery of raw materials to the site. The move to an electric arc furnace is expected to result in 1,930 direct job losses at the plant and additional losses in the wider supply chain. Plans are also in place for the demolition of existing buildings and construction of new structures pending planning permission.
A report by planning consultants detailing the upcoming changes highlights the anticipated impacts on health, economy, and the physical landscape of Port Talbot. It is estimated that around £10 million will be lost from the local economy, leading to thousands of job losses. Without transitioning to the electric arc furnace, steelmaking activities at the Port Talbot site will cease, resulting in a significant reduction of CO2 emissions by 90%.
The stretch of the M4 motorway near the steelworks, between junctions 41 and 42, had its speed limit reduced to 50mph back in September 2019 to enhance air quality levels and meet statutory nitrogen dioxide limits. When queried about potential adjustments to the speed limit following the anticipated improvements in emissions, the Welsh Government indicated that the 50mph limit was still necessary to reduce nitrogen dioxide levels and improve air quality along the M4, even with the changes at the steelworks. Continuous monitoring of the situation will be carried out to assess any impact from the steelworks modifications.
