Ignoring the area around the eyes could cause cancer that kills more than 2,000 Brits a year, according to a recent warning issued to the public. Dermatologist Olga Skydan highlighted the importance of applying sunscreen to the under eyes and eyelids, areas often forgotten during sun protection routines. Failure to protect these vulnerable areas could increase the risk of skin cancer, which is the fifth most common cancer in the UK.
Skydan also mentioned other overlooked body parts that are susceptible to sun damage, such as the scalp, back of the neck, ears, lips, hands, and feet. Wearing a hat for scalp protection, applying sunscreen to the neck, covering ears entirely, using protective lip balms, and applying sun cream to hands and feet were recommended preventive measures against skin cancer.
Skin cancer affects around 17,500 people in the UK annually and is responsible for approximately 2,300 deaths each year. Symptoms of skin cancer include non-healing sores, unusual skin appearances, and persistent pain or itching. Individuals experiencing these symptoms are advised to consult their GP promptly for evaluation and potential treatment.
Proper sun protection practices, including applying sunscreen to all exposed areas, wearing protective clothing, and seeking shade during peak sun hours, are crucial in reducing the risk of skin cancer. Remaining vigilant and proactive in skin health can help prevent potentially life-threatening consequences associated with sun exposure.
