A weight-loss expert has revealed the five popular condiments that are secretly sabotaging your diet. Many people enjoy adding a little flavour to their meals with sauces such as ketchup, salad cream, or mayonnaise. But failing to factor in the added calories from as little as a tablespoon is harming weight loss journeys for many people, according to Professor Franklin Joseph from Dr Frank’s weight loss clinic.
He highlighted that following a calorie-controlled diet is essential for any weight loss journey. Consuming fewer calories than we use is key to success, but tracking exact calorie intake can be challenging. Condiments like ketchup and mayonnaise, popular in the UK, can be high in sugars, fats, and calories, contributing to daily calorie intake. For example, mayonnaise contains 94 calories per tablespoon while salad cream has 50 calories. Adding ketchup means an extra 19 calories per tablespoon, Caesar salad dressing 85, and ranch dressing 73.
To achieve sustainable weight loss, experts recommend making small changes to diets, such as increasing protein intake, switching sugary drinks for water, and opting for whole grains like bread and rice. Maintaining a calorie deficit each day is vital for weight loss success. Prof Joseph advised that reducing or eliminating the intake of condiments can make a significant impact on weight loss goals by avoiding unnecessary calories.
Making gradual changes to habits can lead to more sustainable weight loss outcomes than drastic changes that may not be manageable in the long term. By being mindful of what we consume and the calories in our food choices, individuals can make progress towards achieving their weight loss objectives.
