A Welsh mother has found herself having to take extra precautions on Halloween due to her heavily tattooed appearance, which she says scares children. Melissa Sloan, dubbed ‘Britain’s most tattooed mum’, revealed that her 800 tattoos have caused children to run away from her in fear. The 47-year-old shared that she often has to hide in bushes while taking her own children trick-or-treating, as her tattoos already spook kids on a daily basis.
Melissa, originally from Knighton in Powys but now residing in Kidderminster, expressed her disappointment that she can’t fully enjoy Halloween with her children. She mentioned that some neighbours are hesitant to open their doors when she accompanies her kids, leading her to hide nearby. Children approaching her own house for treats sometimes run off upon seeing her, while others avoid her residence altogether.
The tattooed mum, who has faced discrimination in various public settings, highlighted the challenges she encounters due to her tattooed appearance. Melissa has experienced being banned from venues and tries to avoid grocery shopping to escape unwanted attention. To mitigate uncomfortable encounters, she now applies makeup to cover her facial tattoos when out and about.
Melissa lamented the need to conceal her authentic self due to societal judgment regarding her tattoos. She asserted that her tattoos are a form of self-expression, expressing her wish for people to accept her inked appearance without prejudice. Melissa emphasised that her tattoos do not alter her identity and that she simply chooses to manifest her creativity through inked artistry for the world to appreciate.
Despite Melissa’s efforts to navigate Halloween festivities with her children, the impact of her tattoos on others remains a challenge. The mother’s experience sheds light on the importance of acceptance and understanding towards individuals with unique forms of self-expression.
