A Welsh village’s new ‘ultra’ speed camera, enforcing a 20mph limit, has caught thousands of drivers breaking the speed restriction in just one month. Since the introduction of the 20mph limit on country roads in September 2023, enforcement has intensified, leading to a significant increase in fines issued for speeding violations. Initially, a lenient approach was taken with the new limit, but a shift towards stricter enforcement occurred this year as GoSafe transitioned from education to enforcement.
The enhanced enforcement measures have proven effective in reducing collisions and injuries on 20mph and 30mph roads. However, they have also resulted in a surge of fines and penalty points for drivers exceeding the speed limit. Go Safe, in partnership with the police, employs a combination of fixed cameras and mobile vans to enforce the limit.
North Wales Live reported a substantial rise in the number of drivers caught speeding in 20mph zones, with 7,958 individuals caught in August compared to just 251 in April. The data revealed that fixed site cameras, particularly one on the A5104 at Pontybodkin in Flintshire, were responsible for the majority of fines. This specific camera utilises advanced technology that captured 2,371 speeding motorists in a month, with speeds exceeding double the limit.
Other hotspots highlighted included the A548 at Oakenholt and cameras at Sychdyn, Maesglas, and Hawarden, consistently catching high numbers of speeders. Despite mobile cameras issuing fines, the bulk of the penalty notices are attributed to fixed cameras like the one at Pontybodkin, prompting a major review of the 20mph limit.
Authorities are considering reverting some 20mph roads back to 30mph based on updated guidelines from the Welsh Government, with input sought from local residents. Several councils have already identified roads for potential speed limit changes. Areas including the A5104 at Pontybodkin are under evaluation for adjustments to the speed limit.
The implementation of the 20mph limit has sparked debate as the strict enforcement measures aim to improve road safety but have caught a significant number of drivers violating the new restrictions. The ongoing review will play a crucial role in determining the future of speed limits on Welsh roads.
