When the clocks go back in 2024 and why you need to act now

As the nights grow darker, the clocks will go back an hour at 2 am on October 27, marking the end of British Summer Time. While gaining an extra hour of sleep might seem like a welcome perk, the time shift can disrupt our daily routines. Sleep experts have highlighted the potential health effects of this adjustment and offered tips to help minimise its impact.

Dr Tim Mercer, an NHS GP Partner & GP Trainer with Opera Beds, explained the importance of understanding how melatonin plays a key role in regulating our sleep-wake cycle. Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland in the brain, with its release influenced by light exposure. During the evening and in darkness, the pineal gland increases melatonin production, signalling to the body that it’s time to sleep. Exposure to daylight suppresses melatonin production, keeping us alert during the day. With the earlier onset of darkness after the clocks go back, the body may start producing melatonin earlier, potentially making you feel sleepy earlier. This shift can lead to temporary disruptions in sleep patterns as your body adjusts to the new schedule.

To limit the impact on your sleep schedule, Dr Mercer provided six tips:
1. Gradual Adjustments: Shift your bedtime and wake-up time gradually by 10–15 minutes earlier each day before the time change.
2. Morning Light Exposure: Spend time outside in the morning to reset your internal clock.
3. Consistent Sleep Routine: Maintain a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends.
4. Limit Stimulants: Avoid caffeine and electronic devices before bedtime.
5. Activity Levels: Maintain regular physical activity, even in colder months.
6. Sleep Hygiene: Create a sleep-friendly environment in your bedroom.

These tips aim to help individuals adapt smoothly to the time change and reduce any negative impact on their health. By following these recommendations, people can ease the transition and continue to prioritise their well-being as the clocks go back in 2024.
