A protest is set to take place outside Parliament on Monday, with the aim of opposing the Government’s decision to cut the winter fuel allowance for pensioners. The Unite union is collaborating with the National Pensioners Convention and Scottish Pensioners Forum for what they are calling a mass lobby. Activists, including Unite members and other community groups, will gather near Parliament Square and listen to speeches from various speakers, including the union’s general secretary, Sharon Graham.
Ms. Graham expressed the need to reverse the Government’s winter fuel policy, stating that taking money from pensioners is not a necessary sacrifice but a mistaken choice. She highlighted that it is possible to support both workers and pensioners, emphasizing that Unite’s retired members are outraged and intend to make their voices heard. The union successfully passed a motion at the Labour Party’s annual conference last month, demanding the reversal of the winter fuel cuts and the implementation of a wealth tax.
Following the protest, a delegation of Unite members will meet with Members of Parliament to discuss their concerns. In response, a Government spokesperson reiterated their commitment to assisting pensioners, noting that over 12 million pensioners are set to see an increase in their state pension during this parliament. The spokesperson acknowledged the need to focus support on those most in need due to the current financial circumstances. It was highlighted that over a million pensioners will still receive the winter fuel payment, alongside other initiatives such as the warm home discount and household support fund.
The Government’s awareness campaign has resulted in a 152% increase in claims, encouraging eligible individuals to check their entitlement. The ongoing dialogue between the Government and protestors underscores the importance of addressing the impact of policy decisions on vulnerable groups within society.
