Work is currently underway to transform the former Debenhams building in Carmarthen into a significant ‘entertainment centre’ and state-of-the-art gym. The substantial unit, located in the St Catherine’s Walk Shopping Centre, has remained largely empty since Debenhams closed its doors three years ago. This transformation initiative aims to revitalize the heart of the town and breathe new life into the vacant space left by the retail giant’s departure, which happened amid the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.
Following collaborations between Carmarthenshire Council and Hywel Dda University Health Board, plans were solidified in 2022 to repurpose the building, which measures approximately 8,000 square metres. The ambitious project is now underway, signalling a concerted effort to prevent the once-vibrant store from becoming derelict, especially considering its grand opening back in April 2010.
The redevelopment scheme envisions the building as a multifaceted ‘health and wellbeing Hwb’, offering educational amenities, a diversified leisure experience, and a top-tier family entertainment centre. The facility’s repertoire is set to include community health services, a 24-hour gym, versatile fitness areas, adventure golf, children’s play zones, go-karting, and educational resources. This initiative is expected to not only enhance the town’s footfall but also stimulate economic growth within Carmarthenshire.
Officials involved in the project are optimistic about the prospects of the revamped structure. Hazel Evans, Carmarthenshire Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, culture, leisure and tourism, expressed confidence that the former Debenhams site’s rejuvenation would be a valuable asset for the community. Lee Davies, executive director of strategy and planning at Hywel Dda University Health Board, highlighted the wide-reaching benefits the enhanced facility would offer, underlining its importance for current and future local residents.
Anticipated to be unveiled to the public in 2026, the transformation of the former Debenhams building is expected to significantly contribute to the revitalisation of the St Catherine’s Walk Shopping Centre. Recently, the centre received another positive boost with the announcement of a new restaurant opening in one of its vacant units. The former Frankie and Benny’s restaurant is being rebranded as The Welsh House, joining the array of dining options in Carmarthen alongside its existing outlets in Cardiff, Swansea, and Neath.
As work progresses on this comprehensive project, hopes are high that the reimagined hub will not only cater to the community’s health and leisure needs but also serve as a beacon of rejuvenation for Carmarthen’s town centre.
