Clothes giant Zara has removed a ‘vile’ children’s t-shirt from sale following a mother’s complaint about its suggestive nature. Laura Wilson came across the £10.99 t-shirt featuring a strawberry with the phrase ‘the perfect snack’ while shopping at Bluewater Shopping Centre in Kent. Her discomfort intensified when she saw the words ‘take a bite’ printed on the back.
Wilson, a 32-year-old full-time content creator, expressed concerns about the connotations of the words used on a child’s garment. She believed the term ‘snack’ could be interpreted as something suggestive and inappropriate for children. After sharing her observations on TikTok, the discussion sparked a debate among users about the t-shirt’s appropriateness.
Zara responded by stating they had no intention to imply anything beyond the traditional meaning of the word ‘snack’. The company apologised for any offense caused and promptly removed the t-shirt from stores and their website. Despite Zara’s clarification, Wilson stood by her views, stating she would never allow her children to wear such suggestive clothing.
Wilson’s TikTok video garnered over 22,000 views and sparked a range of reactions. While some users agreed with her concerns, others dismissed them as an overreaction. Zara reiterated their stance, explaining the misunderstanding and expressing regret for any offence caused.
Laura Wilson ultimately decided not to return to Zara following the incident. The company spokesperson emphasised that the t-shirt’s design was not meant to convey any innuendo, as indicated by the strawberry imagery. Nonetheless, they acknowledged the varied interpretations and promptly withdrew the item from sale.
